Is a man’s skincare needs different from a woman’s?

Yes! Following are some of the whys and wherefores that make a man’s skin so different from a woman’s and therefore, needs a completely different and specific kind of skincare.

  1. Men secret more Sebum

We all have the sebaceous glands that secret an oily substance onto our skin which is called Sebum. This secretion helps to prevent moisture loss, as well as softens and hydrates the skin. Both men and women produce and secrete sebum. Men, however, tend to have more sebaceous glands than women, which means they are more likely to produce more sebum than women.

Additionally, men also produce more sebum due to the presence of androgenic hormones in their body. The androgenic hormones secret chemicals that increase the activity of sebum production. These hormones are found in men and women, but men produce higher amounts of androgenic hormones, which leads to more sebum production. Women, on the other hand, have other hormones (that men do not have) that balance the activity of the androgenic hormones and can reduce sebum production.

  1. The high amount of Sebum can cause more skin problems

The sebum so produced can work both ways. Generally, the high amounts of sebum produced in men’s skin make male-skin much less prone to dryness and moisture loss, and thus, they are better protected from environmental factors and elasticity loss. This is also the reason that men tend to experience sensitive skin much less often.

However, in the case of overproduction or underproduction of sebum, men can experience various skin conditions. If you have an overproduction of sebum, you will experience larger pores which increase the risk of acne formation. This is easily observable in puberty where males are more prone to acne than females. If your skin produces too much sebum, you are prone to oily skin and acne. And if your skin produces too little sebum, you are prone to dry or dehydrated skin. Having the right levels of sebum production is an important part of having healthy, vibrant and glowing skin. And this is why men need skincare products to balance out the sebum levels.

  1. Men’s pH levels are different from women’s

While there are variations in the pH of the skin’s surface between different individuals, whether male or female, generally speaking men have a slightly higher (more alkaline) pH than women do. However, when measuring the pH inside the epidermis, men have a lower pH (more acidic) than women.

This means that men’s skin can behave slightly differently and it can be more prone to viral and bacterial infections. The pH of skin care products is an essential component of formulating effective skincare products but in the DIY world of natural skincare formulation, it is usually not taken into account. However, we at Glamveda with the help of our research team and skin experts have developed products that would help you balance your pH levels.

  1. Men have more collagen than women

Collagen is a structural protein present in many connective tissues in our body. In the skin, you find an abundance of collagen in the dermis layer. Together with elastin, it gives structure, strength, elasticity and suppleness to the skin. It also retains moisture, giving your skin a healthy plump appearance.

As you age, your skin gets thinner, especially after the age of 45, which is mainly due to collagen loss. The effects are visible on the skin as fine lines, wrinkle formation and a loss of elasticity.

Men’s skin gets thinner to a lesser extent as compared to a women’s. This is not necessarily because men have more collagen, but because they either have stronger collagen or they lose collagen at a slower rate compared to women. For this reason, men tend to experience fine lines and wrinkles at a later age than women.

Natural products with Collagen content in them are great for ensuring a youthful and glowing skin.

Why Glamveda-Men at all?

With these points in mind, Glamveda has realised the need for men’s skincare. To maintain a good and healthy skin, men too need to indulge in regular skincare which includes all essential steps. If you are guessing that bath and body spray is good to go for you; then you better be watchful. Your skin deserves more care than that.

As a man, you may not shy away from the Sun or pollutants in the environment. Your skin may be facing more storms than a woman’s. This is the reason that you too need a proper skincare routine to prevent pimples, acne, the formation of fine lines, wrinkles and open pores. Regular shaving can also make your skin more sensitive and more prone to environmental damage as it may take away essentials oils from your skin. So, regular cleansing, toning and exfoliation are essential for you too.
